First Post: New Beginnings, New Experiences, New Goals

Hey there everyone!

So after a seven-year hiatus, I've finally decided to return to the blogosphere because I don't want to lose touch with my literary side. Plus, I want this to become a sort of archive for my thoughts, so that I can accumulate a collage of life experiences and events, such that they'll be preserved for posterity. And starting a blog just happens to be on my bucket list :D Remembering the days when I just turned twelve or thirteen, and I hopped on the blogging bandwagon since it seemed like a cool thing at the time. (Looking back, my blog then was pretty cringeworthy haha... Shall not return to those dark times LOL.) Of course, seven years is a long time, and I can feel that my writing skills have turned rusty - guess it's time to polish them eh?

(Right, enough with all those romanticised, nostalgic jibberish. Moving on.)

So today was my very first time participating in a public singing competition. I took part in the solo English category in SAFRA's The Ultimate Voice 2015, and got into the quarter finals with my cover of Karmin's Brokenhearted I was pretty apprehensive at first (I'm also having flu D:), and that evolved into mega STRESS after listening to all of the contestants. 56 contestants, a significant number of whom are AMAZING singers, were competing in my category alone. I honestly underestimated Singapore's pool of talent - where are all of these people anyway, they are way better than some of those on The Final 1 etc - and it was truly a humbling learning experience. Who says Singapore got no talent?

Sang Frankie Valli's Can't Take My Eyes Off You, and while generally feedback from my supporters was positive, it really wasn't enough. On hindsight, maybe picking a more challenging and relevant song would have increased my chances slightly.

Although I don't think I would have gotten in at my current standard, in any case. Today was really a case in point that there'll always be someone better than you. Competing at a national level is really something else.

As you'd have probably figured, I didn't get in - they cut the number from 56 to a mere 8. How's that for stiff competition? I expected that I wouldn't get in, although I don't quite agree with some of those that did/didn't... Methinks that there was a political side to this, since there has to be a fair representation across sexes and races. Fair enough!

Still, I'm not disheartened or really disappointed, and this was a very valuable experience for me, which I appreciate greatly. Will work a lot harder - not just on my vocals, but in so many other aspects of my life - things that matter to me.

Watch out world, because I'm gonna achieve great things. ;)

Yours Truly,
Viv
